In this Photoshop tutorial, you will learn how to create a nice looking shadow icon. This style is inspired by the latest Google icons and if you like it I can show you how to create your own shadow icons in Photoshop CS5+. When you create icons the most important rule is to keep your work clean but eye-catching. Usually, icons come in small sizes so the final work has to look great in all sizes.

Step 1 > Create the Document
Create a new Photoshop document and set the width to 512, height to 512 with transparent background and press OK.
Step 2 > Pick the Color
Set your foreground color to #0d82c0
Step 3 > Create the Shape
With Rounded Rectangle Tool (U) create a rounded shape by left-clicking in your canvas with 40px radius and fill it with foreground color #0d82c0 that we used in step 2. Finally, with the shape layer selected go to Select > All or press (Ctrl + A) and use the Align horizontal centers, Align vertical centers.
Step 4 > Add Highlight
Create a new layer or press (Shift + Ctrl + N) and name it “Highlight”. With Highlight layer selected press (Ctrl + click) to the Base shape layer. Finally, use your Brush Tool (B) with large 900pt soft brush and 42% opacity and draw once to the left upper corner. Press (Ctrl + D) to deselect your layer.
Step 4b > Add Another Highlight
Duplicate the Highlight layer Layer > Duplicate Layer and rename it to “Highlight 2”. Finally change the blending mode to Linear Dodge (Add).
Step 5 > Add the Icon
Download the Twitter logo and drag and drop it to your canvas. Before you confirm use 110% to both width and height. With the twitter logo selected press the Move Tool (V) and go to Select > All (Ctrl +A). Finally, press Align horizontal centers and Align vertical centers to center the twitter icon.
Step 7 > Add the Shadow
With Rectangle Tool create a shape and fill it with #0d628e color. Draw the shape and transform it to fit the point 1 and point 2. Rasterize your shape layer by going to Layer > Rasterize > Shape. With the rasterized layer selected press (Ctrl + Click) to the twitter logo and hit Delete to your keyboard and (Ctrl + D) deselect it. With Eraser Tool (E) delete the rest as the image below.
Finally with shadow layer selected (Ctrl + click) the Base layer and go to Select > Inverse or press(Shift + Ctrl + I) and hit again Delete your keyboard. Deselect (Ctrl + D) and change the Shadow layer opacity to 35%.
Step 8 > Add Shadow and Highlights
With the Base layer selected right-click on it and press Blending Options. Add Drop Shadow with black color and normal blend mode, 25% opacity, 90 angle, 4px distance, 0pt spread, and size. Next, add Inner Shadow with white color, normal blend mode, 25% opacity, 90 angle, 4pt distance, 0pt choke and size and press OK.
